Superintendent Competition FAQ

However, we will endeavour to publish responses to frequently asked questions on this page, where appropriate.
Who is eligible to apply for this selection competition?
Officers who have served no less than two years in the rank of Inspector in the Garda Síochána or the Police Service of Northern Ireland are eligible to apply.
Eligibility for the competition is set out in the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (Appointments to the ranks of Assistant Commissioner, Chief Superintendent and Superintendent) Regulations 2016 made by the Minister for Justice and Equality.

Details of the principal terms and conditions pertaining to appointments arising from this selection competition are set out in the Candidate Information Booklet. Further information available from the HR Unit in the Garda Síochána.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend at interview. Interviews will comprise a single semi-structured competency based interview. This will include a presentation by candidates on a pre-determined topic which will be provided to candidates when called to interview. Candidates will also be questioned on the content of their presentations.
We will endeavour to give as much notice as possible of interview dates and times. The onus is on candidates invited to interview to make themselves available on the date(s) and time specified. The Policing Authority will not be responsible for refunding any expenses incurred by candidates at any stage in the process.
Interviews will take place in the period between 5 and 24 July 2018.
What will happen once the selection process is complete?
After the selection process is complete the Authority will establish a panel of candidates in the order of merit determined by the Selection Board. Before appointment of a candidate the Authority must be satisfied in relation to the matters set out in Regulation 12, including the satisfactory outcome of the clearance process, which includes any process, including vetting, to establish the health and character of the candidate.
What is the dress code for interviews?
The Policing Authority Appointments Unit have received a number of enquires as to the dress code for the interview, namely, whether plainclothes or uniform is appropriate.
The Policing Authority has no preference regarding this matter. Candidates may wear what they consider appropriate.
Notwithstanding the above, candidates may wish to refer to the Garda Code for guidance if they so wish.
What selection competitions will the Policing Authority be running in the future?
In addition to the ongoing Superintendent selection competition the Policing Authority will hold a selection competition for the rank of Chief Superintendent in 2018.
Details of this competition will be posted on the Policing Authority Website at a later date.
The eligibility for the Chief Superintendent selection competition will be identical do that for the Superintendent selection competition.
