The Policing Authority intends to hold a selection competition for the purpose of appointing persons to the rank of Chief Superintendent in the Garda Síochána. Expressions of interest are invited from eligible persons who wish to be considered for appointment to this rank.

Eligibility to apply for this Selection Competition 

The following persons are eligible to apply for a competition for appointment to the rank of Chief Superintendent in the Garda Síochána:

• A member of the Garda Síochána not below the rank of Inspector* who has served not less than 2 years in that rank on the date on which the competition commences, i.e. 27 January 2023; or
• A member of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) not below the rank of Inspector* who has served not less than 2 years in that rank on the date on which the competition commences, i.e. 27 January 2023.

* (Please note that this refers to substantive service at a rank not lower than Inspector.)

Candidates are required to initially complete and submit the Expression of Interest form which is available to download below.

Following on from the Situational Judgement Tests, applicants who have been invited to progress to the next shortlisting stage must submit their application on the form which will be available to download from the Authority’s website. This Application Form will be available on the Authority’s website in advance from 30 January.

This competition will be undertaken in accordance with the “Policing Authority’s Statement of Practice for the conduct of a selection competition for the rank of Chief Superintendent in the Garda Síochána 2023” and the “Garda Síochána (Appointments to the ranks of Assistant Commissioner, Chief Superintendent and Superintendent) Regulations 2016”.
