Policing Authority appoints Assistant Commissioners in the Garda Síochána

The Policing Authority is pleased to announce that, at its Authority meeting this week, it appointed Chief Superintendents Michael McElgunn, Angela Willis and Justin Kelly to the rank of Assistant Commissioner in the Garda Síochána.

The appointments were made following a selection competition that involved a three-staged process, conducted in accordance with the statutory framework and the Authority’s Statement of Practice.

The Authority congratulates Assistant Commissioners McElgunn, Willis and Kelly, and wishes them well in their future careers.

Biography of Assistant Commissioner McElgunn

Michael McElgunn was most recently Chief Superintendent, DMR South Central Division. He previously served at Professional Standards; Major Emergency Management; Security & Intelligence, and Criminal Assets Bureau. He has served in the Garda Síochána for 31 years.

Biography of Assistant Commissioner Willis

Angela Willis was most recently Detective Chief Superintendent, National Bureau of Crime Investigation (NBCI). She was previously Detective Chief Superintendent, Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, as well as working in a number of departments and areas including the Serious Crime Review Team; Organisational Support Service/Garda National Immigration Bureau, Dublin Airport, and Cavan District. She has served in the Garda Síochána for 30 years.

Biography of Assistant Commissioner Kelly

Justin Kelly is currently Detective Chief Superintendent, Special Detective Unit. He was previously Detective Superintendent, Protective Services Bureau, a Detective Inspector in Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, as well as an Inspector in Blanchardstown and Clondalkin. He has served in the Garda Síochána for 29 years.
