The Policing Authority welcomes today’s publication by the Garda Inspectorate of its review of counter-corruption structures

The Policing Authority welcomes today’s publication by the Garda Inspectorate of its review of counter-corruption structures, strategies and processes in the Garda Síochána, ‘Countering the Threat of Internal Corruption’.

Policing Authority Chairperson, Bob Collins commented:

“Early in his tenure, the Garda Commissioner indicated that implementing strong anti-corruption strategies was a priority for him, and the establishment of a Garda Síochána Anti-Corruption Unit in November 2020 has been a positive start and testament to that. The Authority welcomes this important review by the Garda Inspectorate, and looks forward to considering the report in detail and to engaging with the Garda Commissioner on the implementation of its recommendations.”

The Authority has received the report today and will take time to read and consider it in detail. There are key actions in the 2020 and 2021 policing plans relating to the enhancement of anti-corruption strategies which were and continue to be the subject of oversight by the Authority. The recommendations within this review published today will be discussed at the next meeting in public between the Policing Authority and the Garda Commissioner on Thursday 29 April 2021. This meeting will be live-streamed on www.policingauthority.ie.
