The Policing Authority welcomes the advertisement today, Friday March 9th 2018, by the Public Appointments Service (PAS), of the recruitment competition for the new Garda Commissioner.
The Authority has been tasked by the Government with the nomination of a person for appointment to the position of Commissioner and has invited the PAS, as required by legislation, to undertake a selection process for this purpose in accordance with the requirements relating to knowledge, ability and suitability for the position which have been prepared by the Authority and approved by the Minister for Justice and Equality.
There is a unique opportunity for the new Garda Commissioner to lead and shape Ireland’s police service to meet the internal and external challenges of the fast moving environment in which policing and security services operate in the 21st century and the expectations of the people of Ireland for a modern, professional, accountable and effective police service.
This is an extremely challenging, wide ranging and high profile role and an exceptional candidate who is an inspirational leader and accomplished senior manager is sought for the position.
The Policing Authority is keen to ensure that there is a wide field of candidates for this position. Applications are welcomed from candidates of an appropriate calibre from policing, security or civilian backgrounds in Ireland and abroad. While policing experience is desirable, it is not essential for this role. What is essential is the appetite and capacity to lead and transform a large complex organisation which delivers one of the most important public services in Ireland.
A competitive remuneration package, with salary negotiable up to €250,000, is on offer for the successful candidate.
